There are two types of media conversion, media transfer and media migration.  Media transfer is the transfer of data into a more suitable format or to save on cost of equipment. In addition, the media transfer would come from a magnetic tape, such as a CD. The media migration would be incorporated for a larger storage space. This type of storage space would be less costly per GB (gigabytes).
