An extranet is an extension of an organization’s intranet that allows controlled access of information for outside users. This is usually done at least partially over the internet (and non-public internal network) and always involves some level of security protocol, thus requiring some form of authorization for users. Often these types of networks are also called a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
