The European Article Number (EAN) is a 13-digit bar code that identifies products and shipping containers, which is meant to replace the U.S. and Canadian UPCs bar code identifiers. Recently, this format has been renamed as the International Article Number as it is not strictly used in Europe, although its shorthand of EAN has been retained.
