A GMO is an organism that has had its genetic information modified through human intervention to exhibit a desired characteristic. Genetic modification may be used to alter any of a wide range of traits. For example, crops are sometimes modified to be disease resistant and peripherally increase their safe consumption, or to make crops more resistant to the pesticides that are used to protect them from insects.
